Pena Palace Tickets

When you buy a full or essential ticket you choose a day and a time. That time is your entry to the palace interior route, and the site is blunt about the consequences: 'There is no delay tolerance. Tickets cannot be changed or refunded in case of failure to show up at the scheduled time.' It is equally clear about arriving early — you will not be let in before the time, and the site suggests using the park while you wait.

The trap is geography. The time on the ticket is not the time you reach the park gate on the 434; it is the time you reach the palace door, which the official page puts 'about 30 minutes' further up the hill on foot. The transfer minibus covers the same distance for €4.50 return but must be bought in advance, and the page says to budget around 30 minutes whichever way you travel.

• Validate at the park gate, then walk or ride up; the slot is checked at the palace entrance
• Arrive late: no entry, no refund, no change
• Arrive early: no entry until the slot; the park is open to you
• Bought online in advance: reschedule the date and time yourself on the Parques de Sintra site within one year
• One entry into the enclosure per ticket; leave and you are done
• Food is not allowed in; smoking is not allowed; proof of age may be asked for reduced tickets

Working backwards from a 14:00 slot

Be at the park gate by 13:20. The 434 from Sintra station runs on average every 10 minutes but the queue at the station stop can take longer than the ride, so be at the stop by 12:40. That means a train from Rossio no later than 11:31 (Sintra 12:11). The Sintra page prints the full timetable.

The essential visit at €20. It includes the New Palace wing — the state rooms, the Great Hall, the Stag Room, the chapel and the Queen's Terrace — plus the outdoor terraces and the whole park with the Chalet of the Countess of Edla. What it leaves out is the Private Apartments circuit of the full visit: the Manueline cloister, the dining room, Ferdinand II's bedroom, Queen Amélia's dressing room and the chambers of King Carlos. Those rooms are worth €25 to someone who came to Sintra for the interiors and to almost nobody else; the photograph everyone wants is taken from the terraces, which both tickets open.

The park-only ticket at €12 is the right buy for anyone who has seen the queue at the door and decided against it. It gives the gardens, the lakes, the High Cross viewpoint (the highest point of the Sintra hills) and the Chalet, with no slot to keep. It does not give the terraces around the palace, which are inside the ticketed route.

Families, seniors and the ages that matter

Youth is 6 to 17 and senior 65 and over on every Parques de Sintra ticket; the family ticket is two adults and two youths. The essential visit's youth and senior price is €18 against €20 adult, so the saving there is small; on the full visit a senior pays €35 and a youth €20. Under-6s are not on the price table and travel free.

Proof of age is 'mandatory whenever requested'.

The official site to buy Pena Palace tickets is parquesdesintra.pt; its ticketing runs on bilheteira.parquesdesintra.pt, and the search results also surface a look-alike domain with a Pena name and a Google-ads tracking string that is not the palace's own. Buy from the parquesdesintra.pt page linked in the official rows above, and the price is the one printed here with nothing added.

A tour is not a cheaper ticket; it is a more expensive day that happens to include one. The €85 day from Lisbon costs €40 more than the full visit and €65 more than the essential one, and for that you get the transport from Lisbon (which would otherwise be €5.10 on the train and €13.50 on the bus), a guide, Cascais and Cabo da Roca, and someone else watching the clock. The €80 half-day buys the same slot management with a shorter day. Whether that is worth it depends on how much you trust yourself with a 434 queue and a 30-minute uphill walk against a fixed time.

There is a ticket office at the park entrance, with automatic machines during its 12:00–13:00 closure, so a same-day ticket is physically possible. What the official page does not promise is a same-day slot: the interior route is date-and-time controlled, and the site's own advice is to buy online in advance, which also gives you the one-year rescheduling right that a walk-up ticket does not mention. In practice a walk-up in the summer months means whatever slot is left that afternoon, or the €12 park ticket.

Buy the night before at the latest.

Park 09:00–19:00, palace 09:30–18:30, last ticket and last admission 18:00, chalet 09:00–17:30 with last admission 17:00, every day on the hours page we read. The main park gate closes between 12:00 and 14:00, when the other park entrances stay open for sales and access; the palace ticket office closes 12:00–13:00 with the machines running.

On timing, the official page says something no blog does: 'The afternoon is, at the moment, the time of day when the Palace of Pena has fewer visitors,' and it suggests the palace in the afternoon with the park in the morning. Our routing from that is a 14:00 or 15:00 slot, the Moorish Castle or the park beforehand, and the 17:06 or 17:36 train home. The last slot that leaves time for the route is around 17:00.

The Castelo dos Mouros shares the 434's hillside with Pena, and its ticket is separate: €12 adult, €10 youth and senior, €33 family, open 09:30–18:00 with the last ticket at 17:30, and the same 12:00–13:00 office closure. There is no timed slot, no tolerance rule and nothing to book ahead — which is why it is the ideal morning before an afternoon Pena slot. Parques de Sintra also sells the two together at its office, but no combined price was printed on the page we read on 29 August 2026, so we print none.

The castle's walls are the viewpoint for Pena; the walk along the ramparts takes about an hour.

Regaleira is not a Parques de Sintra site. It is run by the Fundação Cultursintra and sells through regaleira.byblueticket.pt at €20 adult, €15 youth 6–17 and senior 65+, €60 for a family of four, free under 5 and over 80, with an audio guide at €5 and a paper map at €0.50 — prices valid from January 2026. Its timed entry allows a maximum of one hour's late tolerance, and its summer hours to 30 September 2026 run gardens 09:00–19:30 and palace 10:00–19:00 with the last admission at 17:30 (the hours figures come from the site's own summary in search, not from a page that rendered for us; the prices are from its 2026 fees page).

No combined Pena-and-Regaleira ticket exists from either seller. The coach days that visit both — the €44 day and the €39 small-group day on the Sintra page — bundle the stops, not necessarily the entries; read the inclusions line.

The Lisboa Card (€31, €51 or €62 for 24, 48 or 72 hours) covers the CP train to Sintra and the Carris and metro networks, and lisboacard.org lists Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle only as paid add-ons at a discount, never as free entries. The same applies to Regaleira. So the card's Sintra value is the €5.10 train fare and whatever the add-on discount is on the day; the Lisboa Card page does the sums against the plain ticket.

Free museum Sundays in Portugal are for residents only since August 2024, and neither Pena nor Regaleira is in that scheme in any case.

All five come from the official conditions or from the arithmetic of the hill.

• Reading the slot as the park time and arriving at the door 30 minutes late — the commonest, and the one with no remedy
• Buying the €45 full visit for a family that only wanted the terraces: the €20 essential opens them, and a family of four saves €50
• Booking a 10:30 slot in July and joining the coach parties; the official page names the afternoon as quieter
• Assuming the Lisboa Card or a coach's headline price includes the entry; check the card's add-on list and the listing's inclusions
• Bringing lunch: food products may not be brought onto the site under the general conditions, so eat in Sintra town first

Buy the €20 essential visit on parquesdesintra.pt for a slot at 14:00 or later, the night before at the latest, and give the morning to the Moorish Castle. Pay €45 only if the Private Apartments are the point of the trip. If the idea of a fixed time at the top of a 30-minute hill on a bus you have not seen the queue for makes you uneasy, the €85 day from Lisbon with the ticket included is the version where the operator carries that risk, and the €80 half-day is the shorter form of the same trade.
