Day Trips from Lisbon

Sintra is the most-visited day trip from Lisbon and the only one with a rule that can end it at the door: Pena Palace tickets carry a date and time, the official page says 'there is no delay tolerance', and the walk from the park gate to the palace takes about 30 minutes. On your own it is the CP train from Rossio (40 minutes, trains at :01 and :31, €5.10 return), the 434 bus loop (€13.50 for 24 hours, €10.96 online) and the €45 full or €20 essential palace ticket, with the Moorish Castle at €12 next door. The coaches do Sintra, Cabo da Roca and Cascais in nine or ten hours for €39 to €85. The Sintra page prices both routes hour by hour; the Pena tickets page prints the rules.

Sintra: DIY versus tour

Cascais is the day trip that needs no page of rules. CP's Cascais line leaves Cais do Sodré from 05:30 to 01:30 on the timetable in force since 6 April 2026, takes about 40 minutes and costs €5.10 return; the train passes the Carcavelos and Estoril beaches on the way. In town it is the two small beaches, the Cidadela, a 20-minute walk west to the Boca do Inferno cliffs, and Guincho by bus for surf.

It is the last stop on every Sintra coach, where it becomes forty minutes of free time, which is the wrong way to see it; the Cascais page argues for a train and a towel.

South of the river, the Serra da Arrábida drops into water clearer than anything on the Cascais line, and from 4 June to 15 September 2026 Setúbal council closes the Figueirinha road to cars and rations the Portinho da Arrábida road from 07:00 to 20:00. The public-transport day is Fertagus to Setúbal (€5.70) and either bus 4474 to Figueirinha (€2.60 on board) or the free Creiro shuttle from the Várzea car park. The tours are different in kind: a €40 kayak from Sesimbra to the Ribeiro do Cavalo cove, and a €72 ridge-and-cellar day. The Arrábida page prints the council's rules and the beaches west to east.

Évora is a walled Roman and medieval city on the Alentejo plain — the Temple of Diana, the Chapel of Bones, the cathedral roof — and the train does it well: the CP long-distance tariff for 2026 prints the Intercidades from Lisboa Oriente at €13.90 in second class and €18.50 in first, though cp.pt gave us no journey time on a page we could read. What the train cannot reach is the Cromeleque dos Almendres, the stone circle 15 km west of the city that is older than Stonehenge; that is what the Évora and megaliths day at €80 is for, and the Évora and Monsaraz day with wine at €67 swaps the stones for a hilltop village and a tasting. Four places on one loop north of Lisbon, none of them on a useful railway: the shrine at Fátima, the Gothic monastery at Batalha, the cliff and the big-wave beach at Nazaré, and the walled town of Óbidos with its cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup. On your own each is a Rede Expressos coach from Sete Rios, and the company's site refused our fetch on 29 August 2026, so no fare or time is printed here beyond its homepage's 'from €2.95'. The tours cover the loop in nine or ten hours for €56 to €65, and for once the coach is the honest recommendation: three of the four stops are an hour each, and the day is the drive between them.

The circuit: three tours compared

The three cards on the platform, compared on price, group size and what each stops at, as listed on 29 August 2026.

The Alfa Pendular from Lisboa Oriente or Santa Apolónia to Porto Campanhã is €35.70 in turística class and €49.90 in conforto on the 2026 tariff, and cp.pt gave us no journey time on a page that rendered — sources we cannot cite put it under three hours. That is six hours of train for a city that deserves a night: the Ribeira, the port lodges across the river in Gaia, the Livraria Lello queue, the Francesinha. The 12-hour day tour at €110 stops at Óbidos and Nazaré on the way and leaves about three hours in Porto itself, which is the trade. The Porto page makes the case for the overnight and prices both.

One town with a station and a walkable centre — Sintra, Cascais, Évora — take the train and keep the day. A loop of towns with no railway between them — Fátima, Batalha, Nazaré, Óbidos — take the coach and accept the hour-per-stop rhythm. A place with an access rule you would rather not manage — the Pena slot, the Arrábida barrier — buy the tour that carries the rule for you, and check that the listing's inclusions line actually names the ticket.

Every train day on this page uses a €0.50 navegante card loaded with the fare at the machine. The 24-hour Carris, Metro and CP ticket at €11.40 covers the Sintra and Cascais lines plus the city networks, and pays on a day that also has a tram and a metro in it; the plain €7.25 ticket does not include CP. Fertagus is a separate operator and is not in either.

The Lisboa Card includes the Sintra and Cascais trains but none of the long-distance ones, and never the Pena Palace ticket; the Lisboa Card page does the arithmetic and getting around Lisbon has the full fare table.

Fares and stations for the DIY days

The official 2026 figures for the five destinations you can reach without a coach, and the Lisbon station each leaves from.

A hire car is the right tool for the Alentejo — Évora's megaliths, Monsaraz — and for the Fátima circuit if you want more than an hour in each town. It is the wrong tool for Sintra, where Parques de Sintra says the road from the historic centre to Pena is closed to private cars and the town's parking is a known misery; for Cascais, where the Marginal coast road jams and the train is faster; and, in summer, for the Arrábida, where the council can turn you back at a barrier between 07:00 and 20:00. Tolls on the A2 south and the A1 north are electronic; ask the hire company for the transponder.

Three searches that this page will not encourage. The Algarve is about three hours each way by train or car and its point is the beach, so a day there is a swim between six hours of transport; sleep in Lagos or Tavira instead. The Douro Valley is beyond Porto — a Porto overnight and a Douro day from there is the shape that works.

Spain is Seville, four and a half hours or more each way by road, and Badajoz, which is not the reason anyone came. If the day must be long, Porto is the longest one worth doing, and even that we would split.
