The mills

The Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense, the Lisbon spinning and weaving company, built its works here in 1846, one of the largest textile complexes in the capital in the years when Alcântara was the industrial edge of the city between the river and the hills. After the textile trade left, the buildings went to the Companhia Industrial de Portugal e Colónias and then to a series of printing firms, which is why the biggest hall on the site was a print works when it emptied. The 25 de Abril bridge, opened in 1966 as the Salazar bridge, was built with its northern approach ramp passing straight over the site, so the mills spent their last working decades in the shadow of the deck; that shadow, the red steel above the brick, is now the thing people photograph.

2008: the creative factory

Mainsite, a property company, bought the 23,000-square-metre site in 2005 and reopened it in 2008 as what its own page calls a factory of creativity: the buildings left as they were, the machines and the lettering left in place, and the units let to architects, designers, printers and studios first, on the theory that the shops, cafés and restaurants would follow. They did. By the time Wikipedia counted there were about fifty tenants along the single cobbled lane and up the stairs of the main mill, and the site had become a tourist attraction in its own right.

It is still a working place: the studios on the upper floors are offices, not shops, and the lane is quietest when they are open and busiest when they are not.

Ler Devagar, read slowly, is the bookshop in the former print works, and it is the reason most people come: two storeys of shelves up the walls of the old press hall, the printing machine still in the middle of the floor, a bicycle-and-figure sculpture flying under the roof, a café at the back. It stocks Portuguese and English titles and stays open into the evening, later than any other bookshop in the city; its own hours are not on the LX Factory page and we do not print them. The rest of the main mill above and around it holds studios, a vintage clothes floor, a tattoo parlour and small design shops, and the lane outside runs between painted brick fronts with the bridge overhead: cafés with tables on the cobbles, a burger place, a Portuguese kitchen, a bakery, a wine bar, an ice-cream counter. A rooftop bar on the top of the main building looks along the river to the bridge and is where the sunset crowd goes.

What it is not: a market of Portuguese crafts, a cheap place to eat, or a quiet one on a Sunday. The restaurants are priced for the postcode and none of them appears on a list this site can cite, so the where to eat page does not send you here for a specific table; the Time Out Market on the way back is the comparable food stop with a longer list.

The Sunday LX Market

On Sundays the lane fills with stalls: second-hand clothes, vinyl, prints, handmade jewellery, plants, food. It is the day the whole complex is open, the day the crowd is biggest and the day the visit makes most sense, because on a weekday morning half the shutters are down. The LX Factory site names the market but prints no hours for it, and the site's own pages returned images without text when we read them, so we do not give a start time; every independent listing puts it in the daytime, and the stalls are trading by late morning.

If you have one Sunday in the city, the things to do index sets this against the Feira da Ladra flea market in Alfama, which has the older stalls and none of the design.

lxfactory.com prints no opening hours for the complex, no hours for the Sunday market and no closed days; its map page, the one page that rendered as text when we fetched it on 29 August 2026, lists tenants without times. The listings that print '06:00 to 04:00' or 'open daily' are describing the fact that the lane has no gate, which is true, and not any published timetable, which does not exist. Our practical reading, which is an observation and not a figure: the cafés open in the morning, most shops from about 10:00 or 11:00, the bookshop and the restaurants into the night, and the whole place is at its fullest on Sunday afternoon.

LX Factory sits between Rua Rodrigues de Faria and the river in Alcântara, directly under the bridge ramp. Tram 15E from Praça do Comércio towards Belém stops at Calvário, about 20 minutes, and the lane entrance is a three-minute walk back under the ramp; the same tram carries on to Belém, so the mills fit between the city and the monastery in either direction. The CP Cascais-line train from Cais do Sodré stops at Alcântara-Mar, five minutes' walk, and the Sintra-line spur at Alcântara-Terra is ten. Every ride is €1.72 on zapping or €1.90 single, or on the €7.25 24-hour ticket, and tram 15E on board is €3.30 if you have no card. A taxi or app car from the centre is a ten-minute ride outside the rush hour; fares are not on any official page, so we print none.

The Ponte 25 de Abril viewpoint at Pilar 7, two minutes from the lane, is €3 on its current reduced tariff while the lift is out and the climb is by stairs, 10:00 to 18:00; it puts you inside the bridge pillar at deck height, which is the view the rooftop bar sells for the price of a drink.

On the way back from Belém, on a Sunday if you can arrange it: Jerónimos cloister at 10:30, the tower slot before lunch, the bakery, then tram 15E east to Calvário for the lane, the bookshop and a late lunch under the bridge, and the train from Alcântara-Mar to Cais do Sodré for the Time Out Market or the Cacilhas ferry. That is the first day of the three-day itinerary; the one-day plan skips it for the castle.
